Düsseldorf-based visual artist, composer, and cellist Marcus Kaiser and Germaine Sijstermans have been collaborating as a cello and (bass) clarinet duo since 2020.
Both compose open scores where timbre and texture take center stage, inviting interaction between sounds, melodies, performers, and the environment.
Each performance is unique, allowing the music to come to life differently every time.
It unfolds like a living ecosystem, allowing space for ambient sounds and chance influences while simultaneously transcending everyday reality. The performances range from intimate concerts to multimedia installations featuring live music.
In their duo playing and compositions, Kaiser and Sijstermans explore the interplay of the differences and similarities between the instruments, as well as their personal approaches to the (open) scores, with great care and attention. The (bass) clarinet and cello both offer a versatile wide range of timbres, dynamics, expressiveness and extended techniques. While each is uniquely distinct, together they create a fascinating interplay of equality, complementarity, and contrast.
The duo has performed at i.a. multiple editions of Opening Festival Trier (DE), Lagerhaussommer at Heim.art (2020-present), Amsterdam Wandelweiser Festival (NL), Default Den Haag concert series (NL), Musica Sacra Festival (NL), gr'Ambacht concert series (BE), Co-incidence Festival 2023 (US/AT).
